Lezhe to Kruje

Continued south along a road that threaded between the mountains and the plain. The road carried alot of traffic but the surface resembled that of the moon, and the endless mini buses weren't able to go fast enough to be a menace. Mid morning we encountered a group of five Polish cycle tourers. Unusually we all stopped to chat, excited to see fellow travellers in the wilds of Albania. After swapping stories of road conditions in either direction we went on our separate ways. The last part of the day saw us climbing steadily into the mountains. With both of us feeling limp we went to a roadside cafe to get some drinks. Our gestured conversation was made all the more difficult by the fact that Albanians shake their head when they mean yes, and nod for no! AFter utterly confusing each other we managed to get som water, it being one of the only Albanian words we have mastered so far. We climbed some more to end up in one of the only towns in the country not entirely made of concrete, having retained some of its old buildings. Planning to visit the bazaar and castle on a day off tomorrow.

Am hoping that the planned day off gives material for a more positive blog report. You deserve it! This last week sounds like my worst nightmare: raw sewage, feral dogs, open showers, bedbugs, yuk!! I've written off Montenegro as a destination (never, ever,EVER!!!) We'll be out of touch for the next week (in Edinburgh) so travel safe & well. Much love, non-camping mum

Forgot to say...... 10 out of 10 to the Albanian barber(and I'll bet he didn't charge the equivalent of 20 euros). Was the presence of a photographer a safeguard to prevent a repeat of the Viennese fringe? Well, it worked. Love, n-c-m

Hi there - sounds like it has been a rough week! Especially the roads. Love the new haircut Luke....Callie did you get yours shaved off as well? I know you were thinking of it.

We are doing well here in SF. Nothing interesting to report. Alex is gearing up for his burning man trip and I am looking for to n-c-m coming out to visit on the 29th!

Love
